Tunisia electric taxi subsidy program
Overview
Tunisia has initiated a pilot project to advance its national e-mobility program by providing subsidies to taxi drivers. Through a partnership between the National Agency for Energy Management (ANME), the Ministry of the Environment, and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), 23 drivers were selected to receive 10,000 Tunisian dinars each to purchase 100% electric vehicles.
Funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the initiative aims to test electric propulsion in urban settings to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate rising fuel costs. To ensure the program's effectiveness, beneficiaries must use the vehicles as taxis for at least five years and provide semi-annual reports on mileage and electricity consumption. The pilot includes drivers from the Grand Tunis area as well as various coastal and interior governorates.
