Tunisia road safety drive awards Tunisie Autoroutes as traffic deaths climb

Over 740 people have died on Tunisian roads since January 2026, with thousands more injured. At a ceremony in Tunis hosted by the Tunisian Road Safety Association at the WHO office, officials called for stronger prevention, describing the situation as "road terror". Bilal Lounifi, president of the association, urged public and private institutions to place road safety at the core of governance.

The Société Tunisie Autoroutes was named the most engaged institution for road safety, recognizing its prevention campaigns, infrastructure maintenance, and environmental actions such as planting 350,000 trees. The company manages a 743‑km motorway network carrying about 183,000 vehicles daily and employs over 1,400 staff. WHO emergency programme head Kaouther Laâjili highlighted global road deaths of 1.1 million per year, and Arab Road Safety Union president Lina Izzat Chabib noted the Middle East accounts for 11 % of worldwide accidents.
