Tunisia shipwreck: 12 dead and 2 missing after migrant vessel sinks
The Tunisian National Guard has recovered 12 bodies following a shipwreck involving 15 Tunisian migrants. The vessel sank off the coast of Zarzis in southeastern Tunisia during the night between Friday and Saturday.
Only one person has been rescued so far, saved by a passing commercial vessel. Search operations are ongoing to locate the remaining two missing individuals. The incident has sparked local unrest, with residents of Ben Guerdane—a city near the Libyan border from which 14 of the migrants originated—holding protests that included blocking roads and setting tires on fire.
The central Mediterranean remains one of the world’s deadliest migration routes. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), migrant deaths in this region doubled during the first four months of 2026 compared to the same period in the previous year. The IOM reports that at least 914 migrants have died or gone missing in this specific maritime area so far this year.
