Tunisian activist Wael Nawar in critical condition after 21-day hunger strike

Tunisian activist Wael Nawar is in critical condition following a 21-day hunger strike in protest of his preventive detention. According to the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), Nawar is suffering from severe stomach pain, extreme exhaustion, and difficulty speaking. His condition is reportedly being exacerbated by extreme heat waves.

Nawar is being held alongside three other activists—Nabil Chanufi, Ghassan Henchiri, and Ghassan Bughdiri—at El Mornaguia prison. The group has been in preventive detention for nearly six months following their involvement in the Sumud Flotilla mission, which aimed to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip despite the Israeli blockade.

The GSF has reported that the detainees are facing medical issues, including skin rashes and untreated wounds. The organization is demanding the immediate and unconditional release of the four activists, external medical treatment, and the dismissal of what they characterize as politically motivated charges.
