Tunisian activists' detention and hunger strike
Overview
Tunisian activist Wael Naouar, a member of the Global Sumud Flotilla steering committee, suspended his hunger strike after 38 days. Naouar initiated the protest on August 16 to demand the dismissal of all charges against him and his fellow detainees—Nabil Chanufi, Ghassan Henchiri, and Ghassan Bughdiri—who have been held in pre-trial detention for nearly six months following a mission to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
Naouar announced the suspension in response to urgent pleas from his family, his defense committee, and various civil society organizations. He clarified that suspending the strike does not mean he is renouncing his struggle or his demands. He also called on his fellow activists to end their own hunger strikes to preserve their health.
Despite the suspension, Naouar’s health remains a major concern. His father, Hichem Naouar, reported that Wael is experiencing dizziness, trembling, difficulty controlling his left leg, and an inability to keep water down without vomiting. These symptoms follow a period where his lawyer, Bassem Trifi, reported significant weight loss and respiratory issues.
The detainees face charges involving alleged financial misconduct and the misuse of donated funds. While the Tunisian government denies that the prosecutions are politically motivated, lawyers and human rights organizations argue the proceedings are intended to punish peaceful civic engagement and solidarity with Palestine. A legal challenge regarding the detention has been brought before the Tunis Court of Appeal.
