Tunisian prisons face scrutiny following reports of 23 inmate deaths

Human rights organizations are raising alarms over the deaths of 23 prisoners in Tunisian jails this summer. The Tunisian National Association for the Defense of Human Rights documented these fatalities based on reports from doctors, lawyers, and families. Among those reported dead are businessman Lazhar Sata and a Lebanese businessman.

Concerns have intensified due to a severe heatwave, with temperatures in overcrowded cells reportedly exceeding 45 degrees Celsius. Advocates describe the detention conditions as “fundamentally inhumane,” noting that the heat poses a direct threat to inmate safety. The International Organization Against Torture has also expressed concern regarding deteriorating conditions and the lack of transparent, official data regarding these deaths.

The Tunisian Ministry of Health has stated that no deaths can be attributed to the heat without confirmation from forensic experts. Additionally, the National Association for the Defense of Human Rights reported that it has been barred from visiting prisons since November 2025.
