Turkey: Districts react to MHP proposal for 100 provinces
Following MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli’s proposal to expand Turkey’s administrative structure to 100 provinces and 1,000 districts, various municipalities and local leaders have expressed varying levels of support and strategic planning.
In Ergani, Diyarbakır, local officials and residents expressed enthusiasm, citing the district’s population of over 140,000 and its strategic location on intercity routes as key justifications for provincial status. Similarly, in Bandırma, Mayor Dursun Mirza highlighted the district’s industrial and agricultural importance, noting its significant tax contributions and port capacity.
Other regions are also mobilizing. In Nazilli, the Chamber of Commerce and local political leaders have decided to prepare a comprehensive report on the city’s socio-economic criteria to present to Ankara. In Kozan, Adana, MHP officials stated that provincial status would reduce bureaucracy and boost regional development. Meanwhile, in Beyşehir, the mayor suggested that Beyşehir and Seydişehir could potentially merge to form a single new province to enhance regional economic strength.
In Zonguldak, the Mayor of Karadeniz Ereğli called for a unified struggle among civil society and political parties to achieve the goal, while in Ünye, MHP officials have begun visiting local chambers to strengthen the case for provincial status.
