Makkah Joint Defence Agreement enters operational phase

The Makkah Joint Defence Agreement, a trilateral pact between Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan, has entered its operational phase following increased Houthi missile and drone attacks on Saudi infrastructure. The alliance has established its headquarters and appointed a general secretary to manage collective defense commitments.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated that Turkey is prepared to meet Saudi military needs, specifically regarding technical assistance such as air defense, electronic warfare, and drone technology. However, Fidan emphasized that the pact is defensive and that Turkey will not deploy troops to conduct offensive operations in other countries.

Pakistan's Foreign Office also clarified that allied forces would not cross into Yemeni territory to launch attacks against Houthi forces, asserting that the mission is strictly to defend Saudi sovereignty. Meanwhile, the Saudi government reaffirmed its support for the legitimate Yemeni government and the Presidential Leadership Council to counter Houthi control.

Iran has criticized the pact, warning that any intervention in Yemen could result in undesirable regional consequences. Some Iranian officials dismissed the agreement as merely symbolic, while others expressed concern over its impact on regional stability.
