Turkey and Somalia reinforce strategic partnership in Mogadishu

A panel titled ‘New Era in Turkey-Somalia Relations: Trust, Cooperation, and Strategic Partnership’ was held in Mogadishu to evaluate the historical and strategic dimensions of the bilateral relationship. The event featured various Somali officials and academic experts discussing how to further develop cooperation between the two nations.

In a video message to the panel, Turkish Presidency Communications Director Burhanettin Duran emphasized that Turkey’s policy toward Somalia is based on a ‘win-win’ strategy focused on long-term capacity building rather than temporary fixes. He noted that Turkish institutions such as TİKA, YTB, and the Maarif Foundation are actively engaged in significant projects within Somalia.

Duran also highlighted that Turkey’s approach to the African continent differs from colonial powers by rejecting orientalist perspectives and instead promoting ‘African solutions to African problems.’ He reaffirmed Turkey’s commitment to Somalia’s territorial integrity and noted that the relationship has evolved into a comprehensive partnership covering security, economy, and institutional development since President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s 2011 visit.
