Turkey announces 25-year social housing and urban reform plan

The Turkish government has launched a long-term housing reform plan spanning the next 25 years to address housing shortages and rising rental costs. Under a new social housing financing model, the initiative aims to help 100,000 low-income citizens become homeowners annually, targeting a total of 2.5 million people over the quarter-century period.

To mitigate the rental crisis, particularly in major metropolitan areas like Istanbul, the plan includes the construction of 500,000 social rental units. Additionally, the ‘Yarısı Bizden’ urban transformation project will expand to all 81 provinces, with a goal of renewing 150,000 independent units per year to ensure earthquake-resistant and safe living environments.

The reform also includes specific provisions for young couples to lower economic barriers to starting families and aims to strengthen social infrastructure through comprehensive urban renewal.
