Turkey announces new motorcycle inspection action plan

Turkish Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi has announced the 2026-2027 Motorcycle Inspection Action Plan to address rising traffic risks. The initiative follows a significant surge in motorcycle usage, which increased by 102.4% between 2020 and 2025, compared to a 39.2% increase in total motor vehicles. This growth is largely attributed to the expansion of e-commerce, courier, and delivery services following the pandemic.

During a meeting at the Security and Emergency Coordination Center (GAMER), Çiftçi emphasized that the primary goal of increased inspections is to protect human life and prevent accidents rather than to issue fines. Key causes of accidents identified include insufficient driver training, failure to use protective equipment, speeding, running red lights, driving in the wrong direction, and improper lane usage.

The new action plan is structured around four main pillars: education, campaigns, inspections, and legislation. It involves collaboration with 28 stakeholder institutions and includes 34 performance indicators to measure success in improving road safety and driver awareness.
