Turkey Captures Last 2016 Coup Fugitive Burkay Karatepe

Turkey’s Interior Ministry announced that former army captain and helicopter pilot Burkay Karatepe, a red‑notice fugitive linked to the 15 July 2016 coup attempt and the assassination team that targeted President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Marmaris, was arrested on 1 August 2026 in Afyonkarahisar. The operation was coordinated by the General Directorate of Security Intelligence together with the Afyonkarahisar and Eskişehir intelligence branches and the Interior Ministry’s special work group.

During the raid, authorities seized approximately 6 445 000 TL in cash and valuables, including 98 Ata lira, 4 half‑gold pieces, 23 quarter‑gold pieces, a 50 g gold bar, 33 700 USD, 2 620 EUR and 13 535 TL. Digital material recovered comprised a laptop, a hard‑disk, eight USB drives, three mobile phones, four SIM cards, organisational documents, a forged identity card, two knives and 1.26 g of cannabis. A health examination recorded Karatepe’s blood‑alcohol level at 0.34 ‰. Turkish intelligence (MIT) facial‑recognition analysis matched his face in city‑camera footage with similarity scores between 65 % and 83 %, confirming his identity.
