Turkey barley production projected to rise 50% to 9 million tons

According to an analysis report by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Turkey's barley production is projected to increase by 50% this year, reaching 9 million tons. This follows a 25.9% decline to 6 million tons last year caused by drought.

The expected increase is attributed to favorable climate conditions during the 2025-2026 production season, characterized by normal to above-average rainfall and a lack of extreme heat in major growing regions. Field observations indicate healthy plant development.

Konya remains the leading province for barley cultivation with 3.1 million decares, followed by Ankara with approximately 2.5 million decares. Because barley is a strategic resource for animal feed—accounting for 85.9% of consumption in the 2024-2025 period—increased production is expected to help reduce feed costs for agricultural businesses.

Additionally, the Turkish Grain Board (TMO) has increased the barley purchase price for 2026 to 12,750 lira per ton, representing a 15.9% rise from the previous year's price of 11,000 lira per ton.
