Turkey's Ministry of National Education mandates teacher uniform standards

The Turkish Ministry of National Education (MEB) has established mandatory uniform standards for teachers in both public and private schools for the 2026-2027 academic year. Under a directive signed by Minister Yusuf Tekin, the ministry released a comprehensive guide detailing the technical specifications for teacher aprons to ensure professional dignity and institutional unity.

For K-12 teachers, the standardized aprons will be white, made of alpaka fabric (75% polyester and 25% viscose), and feature three pockets. Preschool teachers will have a specialized design featuring a kangaroo-style front pocket and a cross-back fastening. The ministry aims for these designs to be functional, aesthetic, and suitable for daily classroom needs.

The regulation has drawn political criticism. Şenol Sunat of the İYİ Party argued that teacher prestige should be built on rights and economic improvements rather than clothing mandates. Additionally, the ministry has begun distributing free textbooks to millions of students for the upcoming term.
