Turkey begins undersea survey for natural gas pipeline to Northern Cyprus

Turkey has launched seabed research for a planned 101‑km undersea natural gas pipeline that would link the Turkish town of Anamur with the Kyrenia (Teknecik) area in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The Oruç Reis seismic research vessel will conduct depth, geology and risk assessments along the route until August 30, after a NAVTEX notice was issued to inform maritime traffic.

The bidirectional pipeline is expected to feature two 22‑inch lines, initially transporting Turkish gas to the north for electricity generation, with the possibility of later reversing flow to supply Turkey or Europe from Eastern Mediterranean sources. The project, formalised with a memorandum on 10 July, is still in the survey and engineering design stage; details on financing, contractors and environmental approvals have not yet been disclosed.
