Turkey cautions Southern Cyprus over rising militarization amid Greek Cypriot nationalist rhetoric

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan warned the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus that Turkey will respond firmly to any further arms deals and military agreements undertaken by the Greek‑controlled Southern Cyprus, stressing Turkey's role as guarantor of Turkish Cypriot security. Turkish citizens echoed his stance, describing the warning as “right on target” and emphasizing that Turkey’s presence guarantees safety for the Turkish Cypriot community.

At the same time, Greek Cypriot social‑science writer Giorgos Koumoullis criticized nationalist calls within the Greek Cypriot community to arm the South, labeling the proponents as “ignorant” and warning that such rhetoric could reignite conflict. He rejected claims that Turkey could be defeated militarily, pointing to Turkey’s NATO‑backed forces, and warned that extremist groups aim to downgrade Turkish Cypriots from equal partners to a minority status.
