Türkiye completes production of first lunar spacecraft for 2027 mission
Türkiye has completed the production and assembly of its first lunar spacecraft, marking a major milestone in its National Space Program. Industry and Technology Minister Mehmet Fatih Kacır announced that the approximately 3.5-metric-tonne craft, which features over 80 percent domestic technology, has been transferred to Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ) for critical environmental testing.
Scheduled for launch from the Kennedy Space Center in early 2027, the mission aims to make Türkiye the ninth country to reach the Moon. The spacecraft is expected to travel for about two months to reach a 100-kilometer polar orbit. Once in orbit, it will conduct scientific research for a minimum of three months, with the potential to extend operations up to 1.5 years. The mission will investigate solar winds, lunar water formation, magnetic fields, and surface radiation using homegrown scientific instruments.
The spacecraft utilizes a domestic hybrid propulsion system for maneuvers and features 100 percent locally developed software. Following environmental tests—including thermal vacuum, structural, and electromagnetic compatibility assessments—the craft will undergo final inspections at a TÜBİTAK UZAY cleanroom facility before its deployment.
