Türkiye joining the Artemis Accords and AYAP-1 progress
Overview
Türkiye has officially become the 71st signatory to the Artemis Accords, a NASA-led framework for peaceful space exploration. Following this, NASA Deputy Administrator Matt Anderson expressed interest in a deeper partnership, noting that Türkiye could contribute advanced technology, engineers, and astronauts to the construction of a planned lunar base.
Türkiye is advancing its National Space Program with a target to reach the Moon by 2027. The AYAP-1 mission, featuring a spacecraft with over 80 percent domestic technology and 100 percent locally developed software, has been transferred to TUSAŞ for environmental testing. Complementing this, a domestic lunar vehicle with over 80 percent local content has also completed assembly and integration for testing at the TUSAŞ Space Systems Integration and Test Center. These missions aim to test hybrid propulsion and investigate lunar environments.
To bolster its space infrastructure, the government plans to establish a Space Weather Application Center (UHUM) to monitor solar storms and their impact on satellite and communication systems. Strategic technology goals include transitioning to a domestic map and navigation application by early 2027 to ensure data security. To support these ambitions, Türkiye plans to allocate 92.1 billion lira to space and aviation activities between 2027 and 2029, while exploring the establishment of a spaceport in Somalia to reduce launch costs by approximately 30%.
