Turkey conducts chemical accident response drills in Kayseri and Izmir
Authorities in Turkey conducted large-scale chemical accident response drills in Kayseri and Izmir as part of the Turkey Disaster Response Plan (TAMP).
In Kayseri, a drill was held at a factory within an organized industrial zone. The scenario involved a chemical accident requiring intervention for 16 injured workers and the recovery of one deceased individual. The exercise involved 253 personnel and 51 vehicles, including teams from AFAD, local municipalities, gendarmerie, police, and health services. Kayseri Deputy Governor Ömer Tekeş noted the importance of being prepared for industrial accidents in addition to natural disasters.
In Izmir, a field drill was organized at Alsancak Port involving 100 personnel and 15 vehicles. The scenario simulated an explosion and gas leak caused by a falling container carrying ammonia-based chemicals. During the exercise, teams rescued 24 people affected by the simulated leak and transported them to hospitals. Participating agencies included UMKE, AFAD, the Coast Guard, and local port and municipal authorities.
