Public safety and disaster preparedness in Turkey
Overview
Turkish regional authorities are conducting various safety inspections, training exercises, and disaster preparedness initiatives.
In Eskişehir and Hatay, law enforcement focused on public and student safety through inspections of school surroundings, abandoned buildings, and service vehicles. In Trabzon, search and rescue capabilities were addressed through K-9 debris training involving personnel from 20 different institutions.
Efforts to enhance fire safety have also expanded, with Talas Municipality launching the ‘Fire Shield Project’ to provide citizens with immediate access to firefighting equipment on hiking trails. In Izmir, the 6th International Fire Symposium and Exhibition was held to discuss fire safety technologies and the climate crisis, while Bitlis authorities conducted fire drills and inspections of public facilities to test evacuation procedures.
Recent large-scale drills have further tested regional preparedness. In Kırıkkale, an industrial accident simulation was conducted under the Turkey Disaster Response Plan (TAMP), involving 257 personnel and 239 vehicles to simulate a chemical gas leak. This exercise utilized support from AFAD directorates across several provinces to test 26 different incident scenarios, including Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) responses and hospital emergency protocols.
Additionally, in the Araklı district of Ortahisar, the ORTAK team held a specialized training camp. This exercise focused on GPS navigation, hazardous materials (HAZMAT) response, and rapid deployment, specifically practicing the management of the critical first 72 hours following a disaster through the establishment of medical, logistics, and sanitation units.
