Aegean Sea: Turkish F-16s violate Greek airspace in major escalation
On September 11, 2026, a significant escalation in Turkish aerial activity occurred in the Aegean Sea. According to the Hellenic National Defense General Staff, nine Turkish aircraft—including six F-16 fighter jets and three UAVs—operated across the Northeastern, Central, and Southeastern Aegean.
Four of the F-16 jets were armed. The activity resulted in 10 violations of the Greek national airspace and 10 violations of the Athens Flight Information Region (FIR). During the interception and identification process by Greek fighter jets, two aerial involvements were recorded. This surge in activity marks the highest number of violations recorded since March 2023.
The incident took place shortly before Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis was scheduled to visit Kastellorizo.
