Turkey conducts third uterus transplant on Mekkiye Bostancı

Akdeniz University surgeons led by Prof. Dr. Özlenen Özkan and Prof. Dr. Ömer Özkan performed Turkey's third uterus transplant using the cadaveric "Özkan Technique" that first entered medical literature in 2011. The operation, begun at 07:00 on a patient who has been without a uterus since birth, involved transplanting a uterus taken from a 56‑year‑old deceased donor and is expected to last about six hours before the recipient will undergo IVF treatment.

The recipient, 36‑year‑old Mekkiye Bostancı, entered the waiting list after meeting the university rector through a foster‑care program. After 1.5 years, she received the donor organ, becoming Turkey's third successful uterus‑transplant recipient.
