Turkey considers military support for Saudi Arabia amid Houthi escalation

Tensions in Yemen are escalating as Houthi forces increase attacks on Saudi Arabian targets and attempt to disrupt tanker traffic in the Red Sea. This instability poses a threat to global economic balances. In response, several nations, including the United Kingdom and France, are exploring ways to intervene to secure maritime traffic and support Saudi Arabia.

Turkey has indicated a willingness to assist Saudi Arabia, particularly regarding technical and military requirements. Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan noted that Turkey could meet specific military needs. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has referenced the ‘Mecca Agreement,’ suggesting that armed attacks against any of the three signatory states could be met with a collective response. This support could range from intelligence and logistics to ammunition or more advanced military assistance, depending on the nature of the threat and the request from the attacked nation.

Recent diplomatic and military coordination between Turkey, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia, including meetings between foreign ministers and chiefs of general staff, signals a potential shift toward a unified military stance. Meanwhile, on the ground in Yemen, fighting has intensified in the Taiz region following Houthi advances, including the seizure of the Muha port, as government-aligned forces struggle to repel the militia.
