Turkey considers ECHR membership review after ECtHR orders Osman Kavala's release
The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) Grand Chamber has ordered the immediate release of Osman Kavala, ruling that his conviction was a 'flagrant denial of justice.' The court also ordered the Turkish state to pay Kavala 110,000 euros in damages.
In response, Mehmet Uçum, a senior adviser to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, criticized the ruling as a 'political project.' Uçum suggested that Turkey may be forced to reconsider its membership in the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and its participation in the court's individual petition system, warning that such decisions could lead to the 'collapse of the ECtHR system.'
Turkish political figures have reacted sharply. DEM Party MP Cengiz Çandar argued that complying with the ECtHR decision is a constitutional obligation under Article 90 of the Turkish Constitution. Meanwhile, the Turkish Justice Ministry denounced the judgment, accusing the court of bias and disregarding established case law.
