The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) Grand Chamber has issued a landmark ruling in the case of Osman Kavala, ordering his immediate release and declaring his conviction null and void. The court found that Turkey violated several articles of the European Convention on Human Rights, including rights to liberty, a fair trial, freedom of expression, and freedom of assembly. The ruling stated that Kavala's prosecution was conducted for improper purposes, specifically to silence his human rights advocacy and his role in the 2013 Gezi Park protests.

In addition to the release order, the court ruled that the Turkish state must pay Kavala approximately 110,000 euros in non-pecuniary damages. Osman Kavala, who has been imprisoned since 2017, responded by stating that the ruling reinforces the principle that individuals cannot be deprived of liberty without concrete evidence of a crime.

Turkish authorities have reacted sharply to the decision. The Justice Ministry described the judgment as biased and a violation of the court's jurisdiction. Presidential adviser Mehmet Uçum criticized the ruling as a 'political project' and suggested that Turkey might reconsider its membership in the European Convention on Human Rights and its acceptance of individual petitions to the ECtHR. Amnesty International has warned that Turkey's defiance of this binding ruling threatens the credibility of the entire European human rights protection system.
