Turkey detains and investigates environmental protesters
Human Rights Watch has reported that Turkish authorities are conducting criminal investigations, detentions, and alleged mistreatment of environmental protesters. These actions occur as Türkiye prepares to host the United Nations COP31 climate summit.
The crackdown involves protests against coal mining expansion near the Akbelen Forest in Muğla province and gold exploration on the Perşembe Plateau in the Black Sea region. Human Rights Watch documented that at least 55 people faced criminal investigations regarding the Akbelen protests, while others were detained during demonstrations against gold mining.
Reports indicate that security forces have used tear gas, water cannons, and pepper spray to disperse nonviolent protesters. The organization also noted the arrest of community members, lawyers, and journalists, alongside allegations of physical assault by law enforcement against demonstrators.
