Turkey COP31 summit preparations and joint presidency
Overview
As the COP31 UN Climate Change Conference in Antalya, Turkey, approaches (scheduled for November 9–20, 2026), the summit is set to feature an unprecedented joint structure where Turkey serves as the host nation while Australia holds the presidency of the negotiations.
Murat Kurum, the Turkish Minister of Environment and COP31 president-designate, has indicated that the summit will highlight ‘climate-friendly AI,’ with a focus on encouraging technology companies to power data centers with clean energy. This initiative aligns with Turkey’s ‘Promise 35 for 2035’ goal, which aims to increase the share of electricity in energy demand to 35% by 2035.
In the lead-up to the negotiations, several heads of state visited Tuvalu on October 6 to observe the accelerating effects of rising sea levels in the Polynesian archipelago.
However, as preparations continue, Human Rights Watch has reported that Turkish authorities are conducting criminal investigations, detentions, and alleged mistreatment of environmental protesters. This crackdown involves demonstrations against coal mining expansion near the Akbelen Forest in Muğla province and gold exploration on the Perşembe Plateau. Reports indicate that security forces have used tear gas, water cannons, and pepper spray to disperse protesters, with documented arrests of community members, lawyers, and journalists.
