Turkey economic data shows declining real mall spending and rising tomato prices
Economic data from Turkey reveals diverging trends in consumer behavior and agricultural markets. According to the Shopping Malls Index, prepared by the Shopping Malls and Investors Association and Akademetre Research, visitor traffic to shopping malls increased by 2.12% year-on-year in August. However, nominal spending growth failed to keep pace with inflation. While the square meter productivity index rose nominally by 22.9%, the annual inflation rate of 31.51% resulted in a 6.5% contraction in real spending. Within malls, the entertainment and hobby sector saw the highest nominal increase at 78%.
In the agricultural sector, the Antalya Commodity Exchange reported significant price shifts for September. Tomato prices saw a substantial annual increase of 53.66%, outstripping the 8.46% increase in transaction volume. Conversely, while fruit transaction volumes increased by 6.70% annually, prices for fruit decreased by 6.62%. Vegetable prices also rose by 38.38% annually, despite a 13.47% increase in volume.
