Vendors attribute price hikes to declining agricultural yields, such as onion production dropping from 6–7 tons per decare to 1.5 tons. Consumers also cited rising fuel costs and intermediaries as drivers of high prices, noting that the primary issue is a lack of purchasing power among retirees and low-wage earners.

By September 2026, rising meat prices have turned red meat into a luxury, with prices exceeding 1,000 lira per kilogram. In Ankara’s Ulus district, butchers report that bones and offal are selling faster than meat; beef bones start at 100 lira, while chicken liver is 56 lira. Economic data from TÜRK-İŞ indicates the hunger limit has reached 37,388 TL and the poverty limit has climbed to 121,786 TL, levels exceeding the salaries of retirees and minimum wage earners.
