Turkey faces rising press censorship and economic hardship

Journalists in Turkey are facing increasing legal pressure and arrests. Murat Ağırel was imprisoned on charges of aiding a criminal organization while attempting to verify information, while BirGün reporter İsmail Arı was detained and arrested for reporting on nepotism within the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK). Additionally, Nefes newspaper coordinator Fatih Ergin was arrested for spreading misleading information after correcting a social media post regarding a forensic expert.

Simultaneously, economic difficulties are impacting the population. Reports indicate a significant surge in tax revenue from gambling and games of chance, with 2026 projections already exceeded in the first eight months of the year. Lawmakers have noted that citizens are increasingly turning to these games in hopes of escaping poverty, while some individuals have reportedly attempted to enter prison intentionally to seek shelter from hunger and cold.
