Turkey economic crisis and legal pressures
Overview
Turkey is experiencing significant economic hardship and social tension. In Van, municipal interventions against street vendors have highlighted the personal toll of instability, while reports of individuals attempting to enter prison to escape hunger and cold underscore the severity of the crisis. Economic struggles are also reflected in a surge in gambling and games of chance, with tax revenues from these sectors exceeding 2026 projections within the first eight months of the year.
These economic issues are occurring alongside concerns regarding legal and social disparities. While individuals facing petty theft charges due to financial inability face immediate legal consequences, allegations of significant profit from stock transactions involving former Minister Fatma Betül Sayan Kaya and her husband remain unaddressed. Furthermore, journalists are facing increased legal pressure, including the imprisonment and detention of reporters for investigating nepotism and verifying information.
