Turkey faces severe marine pollution affecting coastal tourism

Tourists in Turkey are reporting severe marine pollution, describing coastal waters as being in a state comparable to a swamp. Reports indicate that the sea is heavily contaminated with plastic waste and foam, resulting in dark brown water and muddy coastlines instead of clear blue seas and sand.

Specific areas experiencing significant issues include the coast between Alanya and Kaş, as well as Kemer and Manavgat. In regions near Izmir, tourists have noted that while the water may appear clear in some spots, waves of debris and plastic frequently wash ashore, particularly in the afternoons. Some visitors expressed concerns regarding potential skin or digestive illnesses caused by the contaminated water.

In response to the environmental situation, Turkey has approved an action plan aimed at eliminating this pollution by the year 2030.
