Istanbul hit by historic rainfall causing fatal floods
Istanbul has been struck by its heaviest rainfall in 41 years, causing widespread flooding, landslides, and significant infrastructure damage. The extreme weather has resulted in at least three deaths, including a 14-year-old boy who died from electrocution in a Fatih district park and a 34-year-old man who died after a fall in the Sariyer district. Authorities are also searching for five missing persons.
The flooding caused severe disruptions to transportation, with 46 flights diverted from Istanbul and Sabiha Gökçen airports. In the Ayazaga area, vehicles were swept away by rising waters, and some residents were forced to seek refuge on bus roofs.
In response to the crisis, officials have suspended in-person education in Istanbul and several neighboring provinces, including Kocaeli, Sakarya, Yalova, and Zonguldak. A ban on motorcycles and two-wheeled vehicles was also implemented. Emergency response efforts are massive, with over 46,000 personnel and thousands of vehicles deployed to assist with rescue and cleanup operations. Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi confirmed that more than 2,700 people have been rescued from trapped or flooded areas.
