Turkey: Families seek funds for DMD gene therapy
Families in Turkey are conducting fundraising campaigns to secure life-saving gene therapy for children suffering from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD).
In Milas, Göktuğ Kurt, a child battling DMD, received a special visit from the Milas District Police Department. Due to his interest in police motorcycles, local officers provided him with a uniform and the opportunity to ride a police motorcycle. His mother, Ece Tülübaş, noted that the campaign to fund his treatment has currently reached 15 percent of its goal.
In Kayseri, 4-year-old Eymen Altaş is also in need of a 3-million-dollar gene therapy treatment available abroad. His family has launched a second governorate-approved campaign, which has currently raised approximately 357,000 dollars, reaching 12 percent of the target. His mother, Özlem Altaş, expressed urgency as the disease progresses, noting that Eymen undergoes physical therapy and corticosteroid treatment twice a week.
