Turkey controls majority of forest fires as dozens of homes evacuated
Turkey’s forest fire response team tackled 169 fires nationwide, fully controlling 163 of them, including the Seydikemer blaze in Muğla Province, which forced the evacuation of 408 houses and damaged 55 structures. Minister of Agriculture and Forestry İbrahim Yumaklı reported that 45 patients from Seydikemer State Hospital were transferred to other facilities and urged citizens to keep roads clear for emergency vehicles and avoid fire zones.
In Aydın’s Çine district, firefighting units deployed four helicopters, two fire‑fighting aircraft, 17 ground vehicles, five water tankers, three bulldozers and 127 personnel. Across the country, 110 of the fires occurred outside forest areas. Turkey also sent fire‑fighting aircraft to Spain and France and rented two Beriev Be‑200 planes from Russia, highlighting international cooperation.
The minister linked the surge in fires to rising temperatures and drought associated with climate change, stressing the need for continued vigilance and coordination among aerial and ground crews.
