Seydikemer and Kumluca Forest Fires Prompt Massive Evacuations in Turkey
A forest fire ignited on 29 July 2026 on agricultural land in Bağdır village, Seydikemer district, Muğla Province. Strong winds caused the blaze to spread rapidly into nearby forest and across several southwestern provinces, including Antalya’s Kumluca district, Balıkesir’s Edremit and Gömeç, and Alanya in Antalya.
In Seydikemer, about 300 households (roughly 600 residents) were evacuated from six neighbourhoods, and 45 patients were transferred from Seydikemer State Hospital to Fethiye State Hospital. The Seydikemer–Fethiye highway was closed due to dense smoke. In Balıkesir, 210 homes were evacuated in Edremit, while 45 homes were evacuated in Alanya’s Sapadere neighbourhood. No casualties have been reported.
Firefighting efforts involve more than 1,000 firefighters, five firefighting aircraft, 18 helicopters, over 270 ground vehicles and 923 personnel, together with dozens of arazöz (water‑tank) units, helicopters, and other equipment deployed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and local authorities.
