Turkey hosts mediation talks to reunify Libya

Turkey hosted negotiations in Ankara between Libya’s rival eastern and western administrations in an attempt to facilitate national reunification. While no formal agreement was reached during the recent talks, a senior Turkish official confirmed that both sides have agreed to continue negotiations.

The discussions primarily focused on the unification of Libya’s rival military forces, with political unification expected to be addressed at a later stage. The meetings included military representatives from both sides as well as diplomats.

Libya remains divided between the internationally recognized Government of National Unity in Tripoli and a rival eastern-based administration supported by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan noted that conditions are becoming favorable for reunification, emphasizing that bringing military units under a single national command is a critical pillar for lasting unity.
