Turkey expands natural gas network to 257,000 kilometers

Turkey has significantly expanded its natural gas infrastructure, with the total transmission and distribution network reaching 257,522 kilometers. According to the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, this expansion has enabled 73 million people—approximately 85% of the population—to access natural gas. Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar noted that the network has grown from serving only five provinces in 2002 to covering 81 provinces and 995 settlements, with a goal to reach 1,000 settlements this year.

To ensure energy security and meet winter demand, Turkey has increased its daily natural gas entry capacity to 495 million cubic meters and its underground storage capacity to 6.3 billion cubic meters. As of July 2026, the total number of natural gas subscribers reached over 23 million.

Data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) regarding 2025 household energy consumption shows that natural gas is the primary energy source, accounting for 52.1% of total household energy use. The majority of this consumption is dedicated to heating, which represents 62% of all household energy use. Within natural gas consumption specifically, 74.2% is used for space heating, 16% for water heating, and 9.8% for cooking.
