Turkey and Northern Cyprus natural gas developments

Overview

In September 2026, Hasan Taçoy, the Minister of Economy and Energy for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, indicated that establishing a pipeline connection with Turkey could allow local electricity power plants to convert from fuel-oil to natural gas. This transition is intended to increase production capacity due to the technical advantages of natural gas.

By October 2026, Turkey reported significant expansion of its own natural gas infrastructure, with its transmission and distribution network reaching 257,522 kilometers. This network now serves approximately 85% of the Turkish population across 81 provinces. To bolster energy security, Turkey has increased its daily natural gas entry capacity to 495 million cubic meters and its underground storage capacity to 6.3 billion cubic meters.
