Turkey inflation hits 31.51% in August amid rising housing costs

Turkey's official statistics agency, TÜİK, reported that consumer prices rose by 1.84% in August, bringing the annual inflation rate to 31.51%. The 12-month average inflation rate stood at 31.79%.

Sectoral data shows significant price movements. The housing group saw a substantial annual increase of 39.77%, while the service sector's annual inflation reached 40.28%. Energy prices rose by 5.46% in August, driven largely by a 11.23% increase in fuel prices. Transportation services also saw a monthly rise of 4.82%.

Economic analysts and political figures have highlighted the impact on citizens. DİSK-AR reported that minimum wage earners lost 6,196 TL in purchasing power during the first eight months of 2026. Concerns were also raised regarding the rising cost of housing and the disconnect between official inflation figures and the daily cost of living for low-income households, retirees, and small business owners.
