Turkey central bank holds rate – July 2026
Entities: Gold reserves · Gold Reserve · Turkish Central Bank · TCMB · Ömer Bolat
Overview
In early July 2026 the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey kept its policy rate at 37 % and the one‑week repo rate unchanged, with overnight borrowing and lending rates at 40 % and 35.5 % respectively. The decision cited a modest decline in June inflation but warned that July’s inflation could rise temporarily because of higher energy prices and geopolitical uncertainty.
A TCMB household‑expectation survey showed a slight shift in asset preferences: gold‑investment intent fell to 40.3 % while interest in buying homes, shops or land rose to 38.5 %. Inflation expectations for the next 12 months dropped to 44.9 % for households and 32.5 % for the real sector. Following the announcement the lira weakened, with the dollar reaching a new record of 47.34 per lira and the euro 53.91 per lira. The financial‑services confidence index (FHGE) rose 2.1 points to 155, reflecting improved employment expectations and demand outlook.
Analysts described the rate hold as expected and noted the central bank’s cautious tone. The bank later signalled that core inflation is likely to show a brief uptick in July, driven by higher health‑care, food and energy costs linked to geopolitical tensions that are lifting global energy prices and creating supply‑chain uncertainties. It also highlighted weakening domestic demand, with declines in card spending, auto sales and orders, and suggested that extra customs duties would have limited impact on consumer inflation.
A series of economic reports, including trade, inflation, industrial production, construction costs, balance‑of‑payments, housing sales, agricultural producer‑price and labour‑market data, are scheduled for release in August.
