Turkey prepares new regulations for meat products and tobacco
Turkey is preparing significant regulatory changes across the food and tobacco sectors to enhance consumer protection and public health.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry is amending the Turkish Food Codex to tighten standards for meat products. Key measures include establishing the first official definition and production criteria for burgers, requiring them to meet meatball standards. For traditional products like sucuk, pastırma, and kavurma, the use of smoking processes, pistachios, and cheese as seasonings will be prohibited to preserve authentic flavors. Additionally, döner labels must explicitly state the production method, such as “yaprak döner” or “kıyma döner.” Regulations also aim to limit fillers like starch and soy used to artificially increase weight and will reduce fat levels in poultry mixtures.
Simultaneously, the Ministry of Health is drafting a comprehensive tobacco control plan. Proposed measures include a total ban on the sale and transfer of tobacco products by January 1, 2040. Interim restrictions involve requiring tobacco to be kept in closed cabinets at points of sale, implementing electronic age verification, and standardizing packaging to remove brand logos and symbols. The plan also seeks to expand smoking bans to outdoor areas of cafes and restaurants, as well as the surroundings of schools, hospitals, and religious buildings.
