Turkey launches 15,000 rental social‑housing units in Istanbul

Turkey’s Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change Minister Murat Kurum announced that 15,000 rental social‑housing units will be built on both sides of Istanbul. The project targets low‑income households, retirees, civil servants and residents caught in urban‑renewal schemes. Applications will be processed transparently and successful applicants will receive the homes at rents far below market rates for a three‑year term, after which the units will be reassigned to other eligible families.

The first apartments are scheduled for hand‑over in September 2026. The rentals are part of a broader plan to construct 100,000 social homes in Istanbul, raising the city’s total new housing stock to 115,000 and providing accommodation for roughly 500,000 people. If successful, similar rental‑housing models will be rolled out in Ankara, Izmir, Kocaeli and Antalya.
