Turkey launches major investigation into fruit and vegetable price manipulation

Turkish authorities have launched a major investigation into price manipulation within the fresh fruit and vegetable market. The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office is leading an operation targeting 41 large distribution companies and their managers, following allegations of artificial price inflation from farm to market.

Investigations by the Tax Inspection Board revealed that companies used their market dominance to manipulate supply and costs. Specifically, firms were found to have issued fraudulent producer receipts to create artificially high costs. In one notable instance, receipts were issued in the names of 49 deceased individuals to facilitate these fraudulent transactions.

Simultaneous searches were conducted at 109 workplaces and residences across 22 provinces. The investigation, which involves data from the Ministry of Trade, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, and the Ministry of Treasury and Finance, has incorporated statements from approximately 1,029 farmers to trace actual pricing. The suspects face charges including price manipulation, tax law violations, forgery, and money laundering.
