Turkey arrests 40 suspects in fruit and vegetable price manipulation probe

An extensive investigation led by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office into price manipulation within the fresh fruit and vegetable market has resulted in the arrest of 40 suspects. The operation, conducted across 22 provinces, targeted a supply chain network accused of artificially inflating prices through fraudulent means.

Investigators found that distributors used fake producer receipts to misrepresent the cost of goods. In some instances, companies recorded much higher purchase prices than what farmers actually received. The scheme also involved inserting multiple unnecessary intermediary companies into the supply chain to drive up costs. Most notably, tax audits revealed that fake receipts were issued in the names of over 480 deceased individuals to facilitate these illegal transactions.

The probe involved searches at 109 locations and included reports from the Ministry of Trade, the Competition Authority, and various municipal market directorates. Authorities also reviewed declarations from 1,029 farmers to uncover the discrepancies between farm-gate prices and retail market costs.
