Turkey Ministry of Energy predicts doubling of air conditioning electricity use
The Turkish Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources has released research predicting a significant rise in household air conditioning usage and electricity consumption over the next decade. The study forecasts that the number of air conditioning units in homes and the electricity consumed for heating and cooling will more than double within ten years.
Electricity consumption for air conditioning is expected to rise from approximately 5,000–6,000 GWh in 2025 to over 12,000 GWh by 2035. Experts attribute this trend to the growing prevalence of air conditioning ownership and the increasing impact of climate change.
To mitigate rising energy costs, officials recommend setting indoor temperatures to at least 24°C during summer months. The ministry noted that increasing the temperature setting by every 2°C can result in energy savings of up to 15% on electricity bills.
