Turkey air conditioning electricity demand increases

Overview

Rising temperatures and heat waves in Turkey have led to historic levels of daily electricity consumption due to increased air conditioning use. The Energy Efficiency Association has emphasized the need for efficient cooling practices, such as proper unit maintenance and choosing high energy-efficiency ratings, to manage the strain on the national power system.

Following these concerns, the Turkish Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources released research forecasting that air conditioning electricity consumption could more than double over the next decade. Specifically, usage is projected to rise from approximately 5,000–6,000 GWh in 2025 to over 12,000 GWh by 2035, driven by climate change and increased ownership. To mitigate costs, officials recommend maintaining indoor temperatures at or above 24°C.
