Turkey Ministry of Interior issues firearm safety warnings
Following instructions from Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi, the Turkish Ministry of Interior has launched a nationwide awareness campaign to improve school security and prevent unauthorized access to firearms. The initiative focuses on ensuring that licensed firearms and smoothbore shotguns are stored safely to prevent them from falling into the hands of children or unauthorized individuals.
In the first phase, police departments in seven provinces—including Elazığ, Manisa, Giresun, Muğla, Ardahan, Burdur, and Mersin—sent warning SMS messages to licensed gun owners. These messages remind citizens of legal obligations under Law No. 2521, specifically advising them to keep weapons empty, with magazines stored separately, and in locked locations inaccessible to children.
In addition to SMS alerts, a formal written notification process has been implemented in provinces such as Eskişehir, Bursa, Afyonkarahisar, and Erzurum for those applying for new or renewal licenses. This measure aims to increase public awareness and prevent domestic accidents or security incidents involving firearms.
