Turkey firearm safety and school security initiative

Overview

The Turkish Ministry of Interior initiated a nationwide awareness campaign to improve school security and prevent unauthorized access to firearms. Under instructions from Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi, police departments in several provinces began issuing SMS warnings to licensed gun owners, advising them to store weapons and magazines separately in locked locations to prevent access by children.

Following these efforts, the National Education Minister, Yusuf Tekin, expanded the focus by calling for increased parental responsibility. He noted that school security measures are insufficient if children can access weapons at home, citing the risk of students bringing firearms to educational institutions. In response, the Ministry is implementing social media monitoring and family training programs, while local police departments, such as those in Konya, continue to issue urgent warnings regarding the safe storage of ammunition and weapons.
