Eastern Mediterranean tensions rise over gas pipelines and defense

Tensions are rising in the Eastern Mediterranean as Greece, Cyprus, and Turkey engage in competing maritime and energy maneuvers.

The Republic of Cyprus has filed an official complaint with the United Nations, denouncing a memorandum signed on July 10, 2026, between Turkey and the occupied areas of Cyprus. The agreement concerns the construction of a bidirectional undersea natural gas pipeline. Cyprus's Permanent Representative to the UN, Maria Michael, stated that the project is illegal and constitutes a “violation of the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus.” Preliminary survey activities involving vessels such as the Oruç Reis have reportedly already begun.

Simultaneously, Greece is accelerating discussions to resume the Greece-Cyprus electrical interconnection project, following an agreement with the French company Meridiam. Greek officials emphasized that the project will proceed “in accordance with international law.”

In response to Greek military developments, Turkish Defense Minister Yaşar Güler stated that Ankara is closely monitoring activities it deems to be in violation of Turkish interests. This includes reports of Greece planning to bolster Aegean islands with Israeli-made air defense systems and the ongoing military cooperation between Greece and Israel.
