Turkish MP Ömer Fethi Gürer proposes scrapping VAT on car repairs

CHP parliamentarian Ömer Fethi Gürer has presented a draft law to the Turkish Grand National Assembly that would eliminate the value‑added tax applied to motor‑vehicle maintenance and repair services.

The proposal targets all expenses linked to servicing, diagnostics, repairs and the consumables used—spare parts, lubricants, batteries and similar items. It also creates a “full exemption” scheme allowing workshops to reclaim the VAT they pay on purchased goods, so the savings can be reflected in customer bills.

Gürer argues that high maintenance costs, together with fuel, insurance and other vehicle‑related expenses, place a heavy burden on owners, often leading to postponed servicing and higher long‑term repair costs. Removing VAT is intended to lower service fees, encourage regular upkeep, improve fuel efficiency and reduce reliance on imported energy.
